Hello and welcome!
My name is Rachael Lemon, an artist, illustrator, wife and mother to four children.
I grew up in Hampshire in the south of England. After graduating from the University of Portsmouth with an Honours Degree in Illustration, I have spent over 10 years teaching art and design to students in Singapore and Southampton, England and living in the City of Rockingham, Western Australia loving life, practicing my art, ever grateful to be given the opportunity to share my passion for visual arts striving to encourage all ages and abilities within the community to cultivate their creative spirit.
Who Are We?
makeART Classes and Workshops was established by Rachael in July 2014 making their home in the heart of Baldivis at the Mary Davies Library and Community Centre but is now nestled in their own studio in Safety Bay. Since then, Rachael’s passion to provide a space for young artists to explore and expand their creativity, encourage grown-ups to find their playful artist buried deep inside has steadily grown into a fun, creative family achieving Active Activities 'Top 25 Most Popular Kids Activity Award in 2020, 2021 & 2022'!
We aim to help each child, tween, and teen remain the artist they were originally born as, and inspire adults to rediscover the orphaned artist buried within.
We invite you to scroll through our palette of opportunities, make your booking and lets create amazing art together.
This year, Rachael's creation 'PeliCAN (not Pelican't)' made out of clay and single-use plastic spoons, won the People's Choice Award at the main exhibition of the 2023 Rockingham Castaways Sculpture Awards. The sculpture is a life-sized pelican made from elements of last year's winning sculpture.
Rachael had a very successful year last year winning the Water Corporation Sustainability Award at Rockingham Castaways Awards 2022. The sculpture, 'Fanciful Floral Flurry', was a collaboration piece with Sharon Baxter to create a statement about the throwaway culture we live in, utilising household plastics that would ordinarily head to landfill.
In previous years Rachael has participated in several creative, community art projects which include assisting the Baldivis Brumby Girl Guides and the students from Ridge View Secondary College’s art club with the design, development, and creation of entries to the annual Rockingham Castaways Competition.
Rachael also took part in the Perth Arts Festival in 2018 along with 36 other artists, designing and painting life-sized dolphins for The Big Splash event as part of Perth Children’s Hospital Foundation efforts to raise mental health awareness in youth.
In both 2017 and 2018 Rachael’s paintings were selected and displayed as part of the annual Rockingham Art Awards exhibition and most recently, her sculpture ‘Blooming Disordered Exchange’, consisting of a genderless, clay sculpted bust was featured on the front cover and inside the MSWA quarterly publication.
At makeART we are constantly working with the community to develop new classes and workshops. We cater for a variety of ages and also offer school holiday workshops.
